Not all dog harnesses are designed the same and sometimes, the biggest difference is where the straps actually sit on your dog’s body.
Two styles you may come across are H-shaped and T-shaped harnesses. They can look quite similar at first, but the way they sit around the chest and shoulders can be different.
So, what should you look for?
What is an H-shaped harness?
An H-shaped harness typically has straps around the neck and chest, connected along the body. When properly fitted, the front section is designed to sit around the chest while leaving space around the shoulder area, allowing your dog’s front legs to move naturally.
H-shaped designs also tend to offer several adjustment points, which can make it easier to find a comfortable fit for different body shapes.
What is a T-shaped harness?
The term “T-shaped” can be used slightly differently between brands, but it generally refers to harness designs where a strap runs across the front of the dog’s chest.
Depending on the design and fit, this front strap may sit closer to the shoulder area.
That doesn’t automatically mean a T-shaped harness is uncomfortable or unsuitable every dog is different. The important thing is checking where the straps sit once the harness is fitted and watching how freely your dog can move.
Why does shoulder movement matter?
Dogs use their shoulders with every step they take.
Ideally, an everyday harness should sit comfortably without rubbing, digging in or unnecessarily interfering with your dog’s natural movement.
When your dog is wearing their harness, watch them walk from the side and front. Their stride should look relaxed and natural, without the harness shifting excessively or sitting tightly across the shoulder area.
What should you look for in a harness?
Rather than choosing a harness based on its shape alone, look at the overall fit on your dog.
A few things worth checking:
● Where the front straps sit around the shoulders
● Whether your dog can move their front legs naturally
● Enough space behind the front legs to help prevent rubbing
● Adjustable neck and chest straps
● A secure but comfortable fit
● Whether your dog is comfortable putting it on
The right size and adjustment are just as important as the harness design itself.
