How Should a Dog Harness Fit? A Simple Fit Guide for Everyday Walks

A good dog harness should feel secure without being too tight, and comfortable without being loose enough for your dog to slip out.

Here are a few simple ways to check the fit.

1. Use the two-finger rule
You should generally be able to slide around two fingers comfortably between the straps and your dog’s body. If you can’t fit your fingers underneath, the harness may be too tight. If there is lots of extra space and the harness moves around easily, it may be too loose.

2. Check the neck and chest
The neck straps should sit securely without pressing against your dog’s throat.
Around the chest, the harness should feel snug but still allow your dog to breathe, sit and move comfortably.

3. Make sure the shoulders can move freely
The straps should not sit in a way that noticeably restricts your dog’s front legs or shoulder movement.
Watch your dog walk a few steps after putting the harness on. Their stride should look natural and comfortable.
At Barkssie, our H/Y-style harness is designed to leave more room around the front of the shoulders while still offering an adjustable fit around the neck and chest.

4. Check behind the front legs
Make sure the straps are not sitting too close to your dog’s armpits, as repeated rubbing during walks can cause discomfort.
There should be enough space for your dog’s front legs to move naturally.

5. Look for signs the fit is wrong
A harness may be too tight if it digs into the coat, causes rubbing or restricts movement.
It may be too loose if it twists around, slides from side to side or your dog can easily pull a leg through it.

6. Check again while walking
A harness can look fine while your dog is standing still, so take a short walk and see how it sits while your dog moves, turns and sniffs.
The harness should stay relatively stable without restricting natural movement.

Finding the right size
Always measure your dog’s neck and chest before ordering rather than choosing a size based only on breed or weight.
